Overview

The Marangu Route is renowned for its moderate terrain, making it a favorite among climbers seeking a less challenging path to Kilimanjaro’s summit. Over five days, you’ll ascend gradually, giving your body time to acclimatize while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Along the way, you’ll stay in cozy mountain huts, which provide an added level of comfort compared to camping. Accompanied by experienced guides and porters, this climb ensures safety, support, and a once-in-a-lifetime adventure as you journey to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters above sea level.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival & Trek to Mandara Hut (1,870m – 2,700m)
    After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate for registration and a safety briefing. Begin your hike through the lush rainforest, enjoying sightings of wildlife such as colobus monkeys and tropical birds. The 4-5 hour trek leads to Mandara Hut, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.

  • Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (2,700m – 3,720m)
    After breakfast, continue your climb through the rainforest and into the moorland zone, characterized by open landscapes and unique vegetation. Along the 6-8 hour trek, enjoy breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

  • Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (3,720m – 4,703m)
    Leave Horombo Hut after an early breakfast and trek across the alpine desert towards Kibo Hut. Pass the iconic Saddle, a wide valley between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. After 5-7 hours, reach Kibo Hut, where you’ll have dinner and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

  • Day 4: Summit Day (Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut)
    Start your ascent at midnight, climbing steep, rocky trails under the stars. Reach Gillman’s Point at dawn and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. After celebrating your accomplishment and taking photos, begin your descent to Kibo Hut for lunch. Continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight rest.

  • Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (3,720m – 1,870m)
    After breakfast, descend through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and bid farewell to the mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel for rest and celebration of your incredible achievement.
