Overview

The Umbwe Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s shortest and steepest paths to the summit, offering a fast ascent with dramatic scenery. Beginning in the lush rainforest, the trail quickly ascends to moorlands and alpine deserts, providing an exhilarating adventure for those up for the challenge. Although the rapid altitude gain makes acclimatization tougher compared to other routes, the Umbwe Route rewards climbers with awe-inspiring views and a sense of accomplishment. With expert guides and a dedicated support team, this journey ensures safety and success for determined adventurers.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp (1,600m – 2,850m)
    After breakfast, transfer to the Umbwe Gate for registration and a briefing. Begin the steep trek through the rainforest, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation. After 5-7 hours of hiking, arrive at Umbwe Camp, where you’ll enjoy dinner and spend your first night on the mountain.

  • Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp (2,850m – 3,950m)
    Continue the ascent through the forest and onto the moorlands, enjoying spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers. After 4-6 hours of trekking, arrive at Barranco Camp, nestled beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. Relax and acclimatize here for the night.

  • Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,950m – 4,050m)
    Begin the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding section of the route. Traverse ridges and valleys with stunning landscapes before reaching Karanga Camp after 4-5 hours. Spend the night here, allowing time for acclimatization.

  • Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,050m – 4,670m)
    Trek through the barren alpine desert on your way to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. This 4-5 hour hike offers incredible views of the summit. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.

  • Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (4,670m – 5,895m – 3,100m)
    Begin your summit push at midnight, trekking steep trails under the stars. Reach Stella Point at dawn, and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your success before descending to Barafu Camp for a brief rest. After lunch, continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

  • Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (3,100m – 1,640m)
    After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and bid farewell to your mountain team. Transfer back to your hotel to rest and celebrate your remarkable achievement.
