The Machame Route, often referred to as the ‘Whiskey Route,’ is one of the most popular paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Over seven days, you’ll traverse diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to stark alpine deserts, before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The extended itinerary allows for better acclimatization, increasing your chances of a successful summit. With experienced guides, porters, and cooks by your side, this trek offers not only a physical challenge but also an enriching journey through breathtaking landscapes and awe-inspiring views.
Day 1: Arrival & Machame Gate to Machame Camp (1,640m – 2,850m)
Begin your adventure with a transfer to Machame Gate for registration and a briefing. Trek through lush rainforest, enjoying sightings of unique flora and fauna. After 5-7 hours, reach Machame Camp, where you’ll settle in for dinner and your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (2,850m – 3,750m)
Ascend from the rainforest into the moorland zone, with open landscapes and stunning views of Mount Meru. The trek takes 4-6 hours and ends at Shira Camp, where you’ll dine and spend the night, acclimatizing to the higher altitude.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (3,750m – 4,600m – 3,950m)
Climb steadily towards Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation and an important acclimatization point at 4,600m. After lunch, descend into the Barranco Valley, where you’ll camp beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. This 7-8 hour trek helps prepare your body for the higher elevations ahead.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,950m – 3,995m)
Begin your day by climbing the challenging Barranco Wall, a thrilling and rewarding section of the route. Continue trekking through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. This relatively short 4-5 hour hike allows for additional acclimatization and rest.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (3,995m – 4,670m)
Trek through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. After a 4-5 hour hike, arrive in the early afternoon to relax, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6: Summit Day (Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp, 4,670m – 5,895m – 3,100m)
Begin your summit attempt at midnight, climbing steep trails under the stars. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest and lunch. Continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner and a well-earned rest after 10-14 hours of trekking.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (3,100m – 1,640m)
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and bid farewell to the mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel for rest and celebration, marking the end of your incredible Kilimanjaro journey.
