Overview

The Rongai Route is the only trail starting from Kilimanjaro’s northern side near the Kenyan border. Known for its remote and unspoiled landscapes, this route offers breathtaking views and a high success rate due to its gradual ascent profile. Over seven days, you’ll traverse diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). With expert guides and a dedicated support team, this adventure provides a balanced mix of challenge, comfort, and natural beauty.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival & Trek to Simba Camp (1,950m – 2,750m)
    After breakfast, transfer to the Rongai Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through lush farmlands and pine forests, enjoying the tranquil surroundings. A 4-5 hour hike leads to Simba Camp, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.

  • Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp (2,750m – 3,450m)
    After breakfast, trek through open moorland with panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. This 6-7 hour trek is relatively easy, allowing for acclimatization. Arrive at Second Cave Camp, where you’ll relax, dine, and overnight.

  • Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp (3,450m – 3,600m)
    Continue trekking across moorland, passing fascinating landscapes dotted with unique vegetation. The 6-7 hour hike takes you to Kikelewa Camp, set in a scenic valley near giant groundsels. Rest and acclimatize overnight.

  • Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (3,600m – 4,315m)
    Begin a steeper climb towards Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. The 5-6 hour trek offers spectacular views and helps with acclimatization. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in this tranquil setting.

  • Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,315m – 4,700m)
    Trek across the Saddle, a vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This 6-7 hour hike brings you to Kibo Hut, where you’ll prepare for your midnight summit attempt. After an early dinner, rest to conserve energy for the climb.

  • Day 6: Summit Day (Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut, 4,700m – 5,895m – 3,720m)
    Begin your summit push at midnight, trekking steep trails under the stars. Reach Gillman’s Point at dawn and continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Celebrate your achievement before descending to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch. Continue to Horombo Hut for dinner and an overnight stay after 10-14 hours of trekking.

  • Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (3,720m – 1,870m)
    After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and bid farewell to the mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel for rest and celebration, marking the end of your incredible Rongai Route adventure.
